Program: TWO MASTER'S
Cleveland State University offers a concentration in Long-Term Care as part of the Graduate Study in Health Care Administration within the MBA and MPA graduate programs. Students who choose this concentration, in addition to the required courses for the MBA or MPA degree, are obligated to take their elective coursework in long-term care and must complete a 600 clock-hour AIT internship. Successful completion of the concentration makes graduate students eligible for a graduate certificate in gerontology and allows them to sit for the state license examination.

Program: Bachelor of Arts in Gerontology Long Term Care Administration Option

Lourdes College offers a special long term administration option in their established Bachelor of Arts Degree in Gerontology. This degree requires a minimum of 128 semester hours. Students who complete the curriculum required, 63 hours in general education, 27 hours in gerontology, 27 hours in business, 10 hours for the Administrator in Training Program and 1 hour elective, are eligible to take the examination for licensure as a Nursing Home Administrator in the state of Ohio. The Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators in Ohio has approved this option.

Miami University offers a concentration in Long-Term Care Administration within the Master of Gerontological Studies degree program which is offered through the Department of Sociology, Gerontology and Anthropology in the College of Arts and Science. The Curriculum in Long Term Care Administration includes both course work and a graduate field practicum in an approved long-term care facility or program. This area of concentration requires a minimum of 38 semester hours. The concentration has been approved by the Ohio Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators. Master of Gerontological Studies Graduates who have completed this concentration are eligible to sit for the licensure examination. The Master of Gerontological Studies degree was first offered in 1977 and the concentration in Long-Term Care Administration added in 1982.

Program: BACHELOR'S, MASTER'S
Ohio University offers long term care administration degrees at both the undergraduate and masters levels. The long-term care administration degree program is a concentration in the Bachelor's of Science in Health and the Master of Health Administration (MHA). Both programs focus upon preparing the future administrator in the art and science of health care management as uniquely applicable to the long-term care continuum. Internships and practica are required, with a final internship in a Medicare certified nursing facility for eligibility to sit for the Ohio licensure examination. The undergraduate program incorporates a Gerontology Certificate. The graduate and undergraduate programs in long-term care administration were begun by Carl D. Chambers, Ph.D., LNHA in 1985. Graduates work with most long-term care corporations in Ohio and in several other states. An additional faculty is being sought to focus on sub-acute care and hospice services.

Long-Term Care Specialization

The Division of Health Services Management and Policy offers a specialization in long-term care preparing for licensure as a nursing home administrator. The specialization, which has been approved by the Ohio Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators, meets all the educational and experiential pre-examination requirements. It consists of the M.H.A. core courses, a prescribed course concentration in long-term care and gerontology, electives, and a three-month administrative residency in an approved long-term care facility. The successful graduate is eligible for direct admission to the licensure examination for nursing home administrators.

The University of Akron offers a long term care administration bachelor's degree: "Bachelor's Degree Program for Nursing Home Administrator." The degree is a BS in Industrial Management - Personnel Concentration in the College of Business Administration. A Certificate in Gerontology is also available.

The Institute of Life-Span Development and Gerontology, College of Arts and Sciences, coordinates the Nursing Home Administrator sequence and the Certificate in Gerontology.

This 138 semester hour credit program prepares a student for a career in the management of nursing homes and long term care facilities. It fulfills the academic preparation necessary for the Ohio Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrator.

Ursuline College offers a comprehensive curricula in Long-Term Care Administration built on a liberal arts foundation with specially designed courses to include the following core of knowledge: Principles and Managerial Accounting, Foundations in Long-Term Care Administration, Nursing Practices in the Nursing Home (LTC) Setting, Organizational Behavior, Human Resource Management, Health Care Law, Bioethics, Social Gerontology, Biology of Aging, Theology of Suffering and Death and Health Care Policy

The final component in the Long-Term Care Administration concentration is the student practicum, which consists of 800 contact hours of experience in an approved long-term care facility under the supervision of a licensed long-term care administrator. A student will earn 12 academic credit hours upon successful completion of the practicum covering two consecutive semesters taken on a full-time 40 hours per week basis during the student's senior year.

To receive a bachelor of arts degree from Ursuline College, a student must accumulate 128 semester hours. Of those 128 credit hours, 55 comprise the Long-Term care administration major. This program fulfills the academic preparation for the Ohio Board of Examiners for Licensed Nursing Home Administrators.

Long-Term Care Concentration

Curriculum:
The typical course of study covers two calendar years -- sixteen months of didactic study and an eight month administrative residency in a long term care facility.

The requirements of the Master of Health Servcies Administration Degree with a Long-term Care Concentration requires sixty-four graduate credit hours. Of the 64 credit hours, 44 hours are considered MHSA core courses, 10 credit hours are for the required administrative residency in a long-term care facility, and nine credit hours are for the long-term care required coursework. This program is recognized by the Ohio State Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators as fulfilling the prerequisites for taking the licensure examination. As such, candidates completing this program may sit for the licensure exam immediately after meeting the degree requirements.
