California Nursing Home Education Requirements:
Masters degree in nursing home administration or related health administration field, including 480 hour internship; or baccalaureate degree and 1,000 hour AIT; or ten years full-time work experience within preceding 15 years as RN in a nursing home (at least five years of which was in supervisory position) and completion of 1,000 hour AIT; or ten years full-time work experience within preceding 15 years in nursing home (at least five years of which was in supervisory position) with 60 semester units (or 90 quarter units) of college/university courses, and completion of 1,000 hour AIT.

California Assisted Living: Administrator Overview
Must complete an approved certification program. Holding nursing home administrator license qualifies is sufficient qualification. Administrator of 16 to 49 resident facility must have 15 college credits or equivalent continuing education and one year supervisory experience or equivalent education. For facilities 50 and over two years college and three years supervisory experience or equivalent as approved by the state.

Program: MASTER'S
California State University - Long Beach offers the Master of Science in Health Care Administration which includes a concentration in LTCA meeting the California State Licensure Board requirements. Nearly 160 long-term care facilities are available for field placement. The LTCA concentration requires HCA 538, core courses, and fieldwork (6-12 units) in LTC setting (480 hours required for state licensure). Additional LTCA courses are planned.

Program: BACHELOR'S (minor), MASTER'S
San Francisco State University offers a Master of Arts in Gerontology with an academic emphasis in Long-Term Care Administration requiring the completion of at least 30 units with a minimum grade average of 3.0. The curriculum requires a 15 unit core, 12 units in long-term care administration with electives from other fields. A supervised AIT/Internship prepares persons for licensure by the California Board of Nursing Home Administrators.

An undergraduate Gerontology Minor Program with a long-term care administration emphasis is available.
